Now iSight enabled
My iSight arrived today, courtesy of OSAF. Andi and I had our first videoconference, which was a success. Highlights included a bunch of the OSAF staff stopping by to wave hi into the camera. We actually did discuss a bug that was turned up by one of my unit tests. I think that this is going to end up being very productive for us, due to the immediacy of video IM. I hate dialing the telephone, and this obviates the need to dial as well as providing the benefit of moving video.
I was very impressed by the ease of setting the camera up. Everything went pretty smoothly. The one hitch seems to be audio. I originally used the iSight's built in microphone, but Andi had trouble hearing me. Later on we tried an audio only chat, and I was using the computer input to the GN Netcom 4150, which was giving good audio quality when it worked. Unfortunately, it stopped working a number of times, so I gave up and used a cell phone.
The bandwidth requirements are going to push my existing DSL service beyond the 5GB/mo traffic cap, so I'm actively looking for a new ISP for Qwest DSL. I did a little calling around, and a Qwest rep told me that they are bringing out a new business DSL pricing scheme in January, so I'm going to hold off because it looks like switching will result in some service disruption (duh), so I might as well accumulate all the disruption at one time.
