I'm excited!
I'm very pleased to announce that I've accepted a position with the
Open Source Applications Foundation (OSAF), where my
primary job responsibility will be working on the Chandler repository,
particularly as it relates to querying. This is a chance to use my
research background in query optimization to build a real system.
I've been interested in the PIM space for quite some time -- I was one
of the beta testers for Common Knowledge's Arrange PIM on the Mac back
in the early 90's, so I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to
work in this space.
Here are a pair of recent articles that describe what OSAF is about,
and what we are trying to accomplish with Chandler. The first is in MIT's
Technology Review, and is probably the
better of the two (but I'm biased -- and it requires registration). The other is from
Wired.
I'll also be bringing my experience as an Apache developer, especially
distributed open source development. I'm going to be
working out of my house on Bainbridge Island, making me the first OSAF
employee "outside the building".
Working on Chandler represents the convergence of many things
that I've been writing about on this blog, including open source, open
source and innovation, open source "business models", microcontent,
and dynamic languages. I'm going to continue to be involved with
open source projects at the ASF, and you can expect me to
be blogging about OSAF, Chandler, query languages for semi-structured data,
Python, MacOS X, and a bunch more topics.
