OSCON Day 3
This post was delayed by a short post OSCON vacation...
I seem to have a bad track record with Friday morning keynotes at OSCON. Last year I missed George Dyson's keynote, arriving just in time to catch the standing ovation. This year, I arrived at the end of David Rumsey's keynote, once again, just in time to witness a standing ovation. Maybe next year I'll make it. Of course, then there won't be a standing ovation...
I went to Thomas Goetz's Open Source: It isn't Just Software Anymore, anticipating an expansion of his article in Wired earlier this year. There was a discussion of a Minnesota dairy farmer's cooperative and it's relationship to the Avalanche project, but that didn't really live up to the billing (it's still software). Also, I wish there had been more emphasis on the essence of open source that was attractive outside of software. Something along the lines of Coase's Penguin.
Another highlight of the last day was Dan Sugalski finally getting the pie. I don't have it in for Dan or anything like that, but there's some prankster gene inside me that really gets a kick out of this stuff. Dan found a creative way to make it worthwhile for the Perl foundation.
