caller id = 000-000-0000?!
Yesterday I discovered that someone called my home office line 9 times early in the morning. The interesting / horrifying thing was that my caller ID reported their phone number as 000-000-0000. I was very brief when they called again and turned out to be a telemarketer. It seems that caller ID spoofing technology is out in the wild.

Actually, spoofing caller-ID has always been trivial if you have a PRI connection to the PSTN. a PBX, for example, has always been able to fake the number. Now usually it's used for "good" but nobody said it had to be, unfortunately.
There's another service, ANI, which is nearly impossible to fake because the information is attached by the carrier, but it's not passed to anyone under most circumstances.

It's probably too late to fix this problem on PSTN, but we need to solve it for VOIP. SIP has support for signing the messages it uses for call setup and teardown, but I do not think there are existing standards for authenticating these messages between organizations. Doing so at the individual level can be quite cumbersome. I think we need something like SPF or DomainKeys for SIP.

I too have been getting this number. I never answered it, because I mean I was like "what the h*ll, a number all 0s?" I told my friend about it and we were at lunch when the number called me 3 times in a span of 10 minutes. My friend grabbed my phone, answered, but noone answered back. The next time it called, she answered again, they hung up...the next time, I answered and I got "Is this Christopher?" I hung up. I was kind of at work at the time, and my manager started yelling at me, but I explained to her. But yea, I'm getting really pissed at this number, it calls me SEVERAL times a day.

I recieved this number and googled it as well, but when I finally decided to answer it, it was a man duing a local city survey on how and what I vote for. He did not ask anything about my credit card number or something like that. The only personal information he asked for was my age.

Well I googled the number 000-000-0000 also & got here....
I got like 12 of these today on my cell phone so I finally answered with a very LOUD "hello" & he said what sounded like "is Steward or Stupid there"....sounded something like that name....in any case he did ask for someone. I yelled "stop calling here" & he said "ugh" I think because I yelled so loud. Then I hung up. Let's see if he calls again after that...I will let you know.

i too am finding myself being called by this number. three times today on my cell, and i missed the call all three times. I too wondered about the sequence of 0's being a real number. after reading everyone's posts, let me tell you, if they call again, I WILL be giving them a piece of my mind. the calls are like almost exactly 2 hours apart, on the dot. it is definently creepy. and if they wake me up in the middle of the night, they will hear of things being done to them that they have never heard before, i guantee you that.

I've had two calls so far, one at 9:15 AM this morning and again at 11:50 AM.
I didn't pick up either time but the people didn't leave a message.
I too googled the number and came to this page...
I wonder if it's the same person or just random jerks?
I wish I could block the number!!
I've had this cellphone number for quite a few years now and nothing like this has ever happened. I wonder where they got it from?
