Benkler again: commons-based peer production
I've previously posted about Yochai Benkler's excellent paper Coase's Penguin, or Linux and The Nature of the Firm. But I'm writing about it again because Julie took an interest in it, and found it accessible and interesting. She viewed it through the lens of human creativity, which didn't really occur to me, but is a natural consequence of peer production.
The interesting thing about this paper is that most of the explanations about open source are about freedom, or the enjoyment of hackers, the value of many eyes, or some similar concept. Coases' Penguin talks about the economic (resource allocation) view of open source and similar phenomenon. If you're interested in a different analysis of why open source is a good methodology for software development, you should download the PDF, clear some time, and take a look.
I'll probably never get out of debt to Simon Phipps for the reference to this paper.

I misread the title of this post as "commons-based beer production"
