Patronage? Sponsorship? Or just taking care of your own?
Kudos to the folks who stepped up to help Dan Sugalski fix his iBook problems. I don't know how often things like this happen, but I'm glad to see it happening. There are plenty of disputes about whether people ought to get paid to do open source work, and many of the arguments that I'm hearing start to sound a lot like ways to avoid Sharia law (listen to r0ml for the details on that). I'm not deeply aware of what is going on in the Perl community, but Iam impressed with the way that folks in the Perl community are taking care of their own. The other major example I'm aware of is the work that Ticketmaster is doing to sponsor some of the mod_perl developers.
