Dewey Decimalized Microcontent
Julie's friend Lisa Williams has switched her blog over to WordPress, and at the same time she's started to use the Dewey Decimal system as her categorization scheme. This is a pretty interesting idea. I find the notion of a standardized categorization scheme highly appealing, because it would take some of the guesswork of out finding useful content. The amount of work required to figure out the proper Dewey Decimal category for a post seems like a daunting task. Perhaps that's because I've been reading Mimi Yin's article on Natural Workflow Design, which is part of the rationale for the Chandler UI. I'm very curious to see how this ends up working out.

Is she aware that the Dewey Decimal System is trademarked (at least in the US)? The trademark is currently owned by Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC), who last year sued the Library Hotel in New York City for infringement.
The hotel settled with OCLC. The hotel can continue to use the Dewey system, in return for making a donation to a charity and agreeing to acknowledge the ownership of the trademarks.

I suspect Dewey categorization wouldn't be too hard for most blogs. For the most part, we each write mostly about three or four topics--our job (mebbe from two perspectives), a hobby or two, some photos (or politics, or Atom/RSS, or...) I'd think we'd quickly get the feel for "our" part of the Dewey terrain, just like we learn where the library shelves the books which most interest us.
When we get off-topic, of course, things might get complicated.

Ted Leung mentions Lisa Williams' project in which the Dewey Decimal System is being used to categorize entries in a weblog. He comments favourably, suggesting that "I find the notion of a standardized categorization scheme highly appealing". Well I don't...
