Down with TypeKey!
Fellow OSAF'er Stuart Parmenter has started a series of posts on his implementation of a TypeKey compatible comment authentication system. This should allow interested parties to build a system that could be used instead of TypeKey.
You'll still need to register with a central system, but at least you'll have some choice.

Interesting. But the point of TypeKey is that you don't have to host it yourself, and that chances are SixApart is going to try and keep the system up.
Also, I just implemented a library to easily use TypeKey in ASP.Net ( http://blog.monstuff.com/archives/000184.html ). I'll follow up to make sure it works with his alternative system as well ;-)
