It did it again, so it's the fodder for today's post. Every once in a while, the Powerbook refuses to give me an unlock panel after I try to get the machine back from the screensaver/sleep. Instead, I'm treated to a very nice spinning rainbow beachball. I've tried closing the lid and opening it back up. I've tried sshing in from another machine to try to find out what's hung. None of the logs that I've checked gives any indication of what might be happening. The machine is usually up for about a week before this happens.
Debugging ideas (or a solution) would be appreciated.
It may just be an illusion, but I find that I can temporarily fix this annoyance by resetting the PMU. Best of luck.

I had the same problem...seems to have been fixed by the 10.3.6 update. AFAIK it was even mentioned as a bugfix in the extended release notes.

Obligatory answer: switch to a Windows computer (the Acer Ferrari is nice and not too expensive).
Oh, wait...

I haven't noticed the problem since 10.3.6 update, so hopefully Matt is right about it being fixed and you haven't updated yet. However, it has been a long standing bug in the Mac portable line. I don't know of any surefire fix, but I do find that it happens significantly less often if you follow a few careful procedures with the machine. First, althought up-time is a supreme bit of bragging rights, don't leave the machine too long without a reboot. I actually run Cocktail with restart once a week to force all the cron jobs that my machine always misses b/c it's usually in sleep mode at 3am (unless I'm working a late night). Second, make sure your computer isn't doing to many things at the same time when you put it to sleep. Keep your browser with the multiple tabs open, sure, but if Word is open and just sitting there, save the file and shut it down before putting the machine to sleep. Maybe it's just my anti-Microsoft superstition, but I find that it usually happens when I put the machine to sleep with a Word Doc open.

I'm already running 10.3.6.
I'll try the PMU trick if it happens again.

Does the spinning cursor move around for a while, and then lock up? If so, it could be a hard drive problem. My PowerBook hard drive decided to die like that. It was strange though, because it did it a couple of times before finally diein.g I finally have it working again now, after replacing some parts.

I find pressing the space bar usually brings up the login dialog. Good luck.

I ran into this using a couple of IM programs (most recently Adium). The IM app stores passwords in the keychain and not in memory, so when the connection is broken and re-established it needs access to the keychain.
I found that if you have the IM app running, and the system is configured to lock the keychain when sleeping, and you don't respond to the login dialog, but let the machine go back to sleep, then the whole system becomes hosed in exactly the way you describe. I assume there's some interaction between the login dialog and keychain dialog that is causing the problem.
So could there be some app running that's accessing the keychain or otherwise putting up some kind of dialog box when the machine wakes up?

Larry,
This sounds much closer to what is happening. I'm using SSHKeychain, and I recently changed the security settings to lock the keychain. I'll set it back and see what happens...

Ah yes - I'm also using SSHKeyChain, and the same thing happens (10.3.6, 17" PB).
I'll check the PMU thing, but I don't hold up much hope.
Normally, this seems to happen when I have a lot of Safari windows open... its a real pain because not only do I lose the work I was "saving for later", I also have to wiat for the disk to fsck before the machine will come back up.
