On the way home from Northern Voice, we stopped off at the Vancouver Aquarium. After a fun time inside, we returned to our car to find the glove box open, a suitcase unzipped, and the pair of bags containing my and Julie's laptops gone.
Needless to say, this is going to a pretty major cramp in our ability to blog/respond to e-mail, etc, while we sort out police reports, insurance companies and so on. We really depended on those machines for day to day life. The impact of them being gone is still sinking in.
If anyone has tips for dealing with this kind of situation, we would really appreciate them.
I'm very sorry to hear that, Ted. We've got a spare iBook if you'd like to use it as a bridge? Let me know and I'll swing it by. It's blanked out and ready to use.

Ted, that's awful. I apologize on behalf of my city... one piece of advice given the recent experience of a friend is to change your email passwords and notify VISA, your bank, etc ASAP. Having access to someone's email account can get a foot into a surprising number of doors.

Thats terrible.
I love Vancouver, and I love visiting, but this is definitely not an isolated incident. Last year we had our laptops and camera stolen out of our trunk while parked for 20 minutes at Stanley Park.
I'm pretty sure that US plates get you targeted as a tourist, and that residents should warn visitors who drive of this problem.
(we handled it by going fetal, and watching movies, but I wouldn't suggest that as a solution)

Ted, I'm so sorry to hear this. Hopefully folks have computers you can borrow until your insurance comes through. You might also want to grab one from ebay.
Speaking of which, keep your eye on ebay for your laptops.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I had a great time seeing you and Julie when you were here and am looking forward to discussing the PySight usage you mentioned. I went through some of the same trauma when my PowerBook hard-drive died, and my thoughts are with you.
Best wishes (for good backups).

I am so sorry for both of you! It's very sad that thieves take advantage of tourists like this. And it is also sad that the area by the Aquarium is one of the worst in the city for car break-ins.
Do let me know if I can help in any way.

Monitor http://vancouver.craigslist.org/ too, as well as http://www.buysell.com/ -- sorry to say, but Vancouver and our neighbouring city of Surrey, and the various suburbs, do have high car break-in rates, a consequence of some serious drug problems in parts of our cities.
Hope it didn't spoil your trip too much. On the plus side, it reminds me to take the expensive gear out of the car when we visit other places, and to continue with my paranoid backup strategy.

So sorry to hear about the loss -- what a kick in the gut.
Jen and I had our car stolen in Vancouver on the last day of our honeymoon back in 2001 -- the police were a bit miffed that we were getting on a bus to come back to Seattle -- figured it would be a low priority for them, but it wasn't.
Turns out they found the car undamaged, and we were back on our merry way with only about a four hour delay.
Vancouver is a great city, but the experience forever changed my practices when we visit in a car with US plates.

Sorry to hear about that. Cindy's purse was stolen out of our car in Portland (along with the kids school backpacks) a few years back - They racked up charges and wrote bad checks for days even though we notified the bank and police immediately. The bank wrote-off the VISA charges, since we had notified them immediately. It took a year of sending copies of police reports to retail collection agencies to clear up the bad checks. If there was any unencrypted identity-type information on the laptops, do some research into identity theft to make sure you've covered your bases. (There are good sites online.)
