Like personality sorters? Try this article from Rands in Repose. I don't think I had seen the Organic/Mechanic distinction before. It also links to another article on Incrementalists and Completionists, which I think is kind of related to Shirky's Radial vs Cartesian.
Interesting. I've been thinking (after reading about application fabrics) how all robust, scalable systems seem to have tightly coupled, procedural "islands" woven together by loosely-coupled "seas" of declarations. Think of Interface Builder, or web services. Or the Internet.
I've also thought about Radial vs. Cartesian as one of those fundamental paradigm paradoxes. Interestinly, I usually think of the earth as locally Cartesian but globally Radial (maps vs. globes), but historically it was probably the other way around (compass vs. astrogation).
Hmm. Thanks for the provocative post.
